At ConverseBSL, we are passionate about serving the Deaf community. Our team of instructors comprises both Deaf and Hearing individuals who possess a wealth of knowledge and skills. We have a deep love for the language and are committed to empowering those who aspire to work as CSWs or Interpreters. Our courses offer the flexibility of remote and face-to-face learning, allowing you to choose the method that suits you best. Level 1

The BSL 101 qualification is split into three units, these can be achieved separately. If you are new to the world of British Sign Language (BSL) then it is advised to cover the units in order as each unit builds on the previous one.

BSL101 covers an Introduction to BSL

BSL102 covers Conversational BSL

BSL103 covers Communication in BSL about Everyday Life.

To receive the full Level 1 Award in British Sign Language, all the above units must be achieved. When achieved you will have the means to:

Understand and use a limited range of simple words and sentences in BSL.
Take part in simple, everyday conversations in BSL.
Give and follow simple directions or instructions in BSL.
Give and follow simple familiar statements or descriptions in BSL.

Course Start Date: 13/06/2025

Location: Remote

Time: 18:30 - 20:30

Course Cost: £480 inc. exam fees

BSL Level 2

Upon completing the Level 1 course, you can move on to the Level 2 course.

The BSL Level 2 course comprises 4 topics to expand your signing ability and 3 assessments in total.

This course comprises of:

3 hours a week over the course of 25 weeks

Topics covered:

Everyday Conversation. Eating and Drinking. Shopping and Spending. Travel and Holiday.

The assessments to be completed are:

Receptive Skills exam with multiple choice questions.
Productive Skills presentation in BSL for 3-5 minutes.
Conversational Skills conversation in BSL for 6-7 minutes.

Course Cost: £690 inc. exam fees

BSL Level 3

Finished your Level 2 BSL course and looking to further continue your studies with a Level 3 BSL course?

This course comprises of:

3 hours a week over the course of 30 weeks and 7 topics to build on your ability with BSL and 3 assessments to complete.

Topics are:

BSL Grammar.
Home life.
Social and recreational activities.
Education and Training.
Employment.
Accessibility and Barriers.
Deaf culture and Deaf history.
The 3 assessments that need to be achieved for this qualification are:
Productive Skills, a formal presentation for 8-10 minutes
Conversational skills, an informal conversation for 10-12 minutes.
Receptive Skills, a written exam using receptive skills.

Course Start Date: 04/11/2025

Location: JDA - North Finchley

Time: 14:00 - 17:00

In person.

Course Cost: £999 inc. exam fees

BSL Level 4

Ready to delve further into your linguistic skills in BSL?

This course comprises of:

3 hours per week over the course of 30 weeks.

6 topics to build on your ability with BSL and 3 assessments to complete.

The 6 Topics are:

Employment and Business.

Education.

Health and Wellbeing.

Society and politics.

Technology and Science.

Media and Culture.

The 3 assessments that need to be achieved for this qualification are:

Productive Skills, a formal presentation for 10-12 minutes

Conversational skills, an informal conversation for 12-14 minutes.

Receptive Skills, a written exam using receptive skills.

Course Cost: £1150 inc. exam fees

BSL Level 6

Ready for your BSL Level 6 course?

The Level 6 course is useful for anybody who is in regular contact with deaf people, be it through work or social life. On completion of this course, learners will be able to progress onto professional training in sign language interpreting, translation and communication support by completing the Level 6 Diploma in Sign Language Interpreting and Translation.

This course is 3 hours a week over 30 weeks

The following are the learning outcomes:

LO1 – Use receptive and productive skills to engage in all types of complex social interaction
LO2 – Use and understand complex language, and maintain fluency, grammatical accuracy and
coherence in sustained contributions containing complex language
LO3 – Understand sustained signed discourse containing complex language
LO4 – Use reference sources to confirm or clarify the meaning of signs.

Time: 10:00 - 13:00
